Dozens Rescued in Dartmouth Skiway Chairlift Emergency

DARTMOUTH, N.H. — A dramatic rescue unfolded at Dartmouth Skiway this week when a chairlift malfunctioned in freezing conditions, leaving dozens of skiers stranded midair.

Emergency crews, including Hanover and Lyme firefighters, launched a technical rescue operation and evacuated 59 people using ropes, according to official reports. Dartmouth Ski Patrol assisted in getting everyone safely to the ground in under 90 minutes.

All skiers were evaluated for cold-weather injuries and brought to the main lodge to warm up and reunite with family. One person required hospital treatment, while the rest were able to continue enjoying their winter day after the scare.

“The operation was completed with quick, safe, and efficient work by all rescuers,” the Lyme Fire Department wrote on Facebook. “All operations occurred before dark with no injuries reported to any responders. It was an impressive, cohesive effort by many teams working together from multiple agencies.”

There is currently no word yet on what caused the chairlift to malfunction. Skiers and visitors are reminded to follow all safety guidelines while enjoying the slopes, especially in frigid winter conditions.
